People for Education Conference<\/a><\/strong>
\nNov 5 & 6, York University<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This will be the first public statement by newly appointed Minister of Education Broten, and there will be a panel including two former Ministers of Education, Janet Ecker and Gerard Kennedy. Other sessions will cover: what makes a good teacher, schools of choice, fundraising, transitions, and the role of Trustees, Special Education, New healthy food and beverage policy (with a taste test), Parent Councils, and Parent Involvement Committees. Plus a building full of parents, policy makers and politicians who are passionate about education, want to share information, and want to hear what you have to say.<\/p>\n
Concussions, Getting the Facts<\/strong> Nov 9, 7pm, Lawrence Park CI<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Much of what we learned when we were younger about concussions and other brain injuries turns out to have been flawed. New research into the brain has radically altered our understanding of what causes a brain injury, how to prevent one, how to identify one, and how to help someone recover from one. Dr. Paul Comper (neuropsychologist), Dr. Mark Leung (Sports Medicine Physician) and Dr. Robert Brock (Orthopaedic Surgeon\/Sports Medicine Physician) will brief parents, students, and educators on what we know now.<\/div>\n
TDSB is taking a lead in the prevention and management of brain injuries. On Nov. 2, the Program and School Services Committee will be considering a “brain injury policy” that I have proposed to ensure that TDSB remains in the forefront of protecting students’ brains from the lasting effects of injury.<\/p>\n

Once a year, TDSB’s Parent Involvement Advisory Committee and staff hold a one-day workshop-filled conference specifically to meet the needs of TDSB parents. Topics covered include: Special Education, Preparing Your Child for High School, Supporting your Early Learner in JK to Grade 2, and Social Media – the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
