The grade 5/6 students in Mr. Hussain’s class went one step further and made a commitment to help fund a Syrian family by partnering with Allenby Community Welcomes Refugees. Students worked in groups to conduct a community service initiative of their own doing and proved, in the words of Craig Kielburger, that “You are never too young to change the world.” When I visited the class and they shared their learning and their work I asked that they write something to be included in the newsletter, here are their words:

“My group had our bake sale on Briar Hill, it ran for over an hour and a half and we had a reasonable amount of people visit us. Our bake sale had hot chocolate, muffins, cupcakes and marshmallow monsters. Two people in our group could not make it to the sale but they each made more than $30 by themselves. In total we made $120 and we added it together with the other groups, in total the class raised over $1400. We donated all of the money to Allenby Community Welcomes Refugees.” – Adeline (Grade 5 student)

“On December 21, 2015, my group did a bake sale in front of the cafe The Mad Bean on Eglinton Ave. We sold rice krispie treats, chocolate chip cookies, carrot cake, banana chocolate chip muffins and brownies. The Mad Bean donated their coffee (thank you, Mad Bean!). We stood in the rain and sold our goods. Some people didn’t even buy anything they just donated to the refugees. We raised $122.05 within two hours. People were very supportive and kind. We appreciate all their contributions. We were one of five groups in our class. Together we raised over $1400! I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was a very excellent experience.” – Caleb (Grade 6 student)

Students in many of our classes at Allenby have been reading, discussing and writing about Canada’s commitment to welcome Syrian refugees.
