In order to support our students with transitioning next year, we are doing the following this year:

JK Open House
We are welcoming our new junior kindergarten students and families next Monday June 6th from 8:45-10:00am for our Open House. During the Open House, we will provide an overview of Allenby and the kindergarten program, share strategies for parents to support their children with school readiness and invite parents to visit two classrooms and our kindergarten yard while speaking to our kindergarten team. Invitations were mailed to new kindergarten families and I hope that many families can attend.

Grade 6 to 7 Transition
As we welcome new students to Allenby next year, we say farewell to our grade six students as they graduate to middle school. Today our grade six students will visit Glenview to learn more about the school and their programs. Regardless of whether our grade sixes are planning to attend Glenview next year or another school, the tour will provide some relevant information about the “middle school experience”.

Additionally, on Monday, June 20th from 9:00-9:40 am I will be doing a presentation in the gym for our grade six students on my thoughts and insights as an educator, principal and mother of two teenagers on how to ensure a smooth transition to grade seven. Grade six parents are welcome to attend as the presentation will be geared to both students and parents.

Special Education Transition Meetings and Transition Plans
Reviewing supports and ensuring transition plans are in place for our special education students for next year is essential to their success. Last week, the special education teachers met with the vice principal and myself for the entire day to review data and input from staff in order to create a special education plan for next year. Teachers will be developing transition plans for students with individual education plans who require specific goals and strategies to support a successful transition to their next grade or school. The transition plans, for these students, will be sent home with the final report card. For any students at Allenby who require different educational supports next year, we will be notifying parents in the weeks ahead.

Information Shared with Next Year’s Teacher
Teachers share information with each other about student learning and supports. Additionally, Allenby students this year will be participating in writing a letter (or similar writing task) to be given to next year’s teacher outlining their strengths, needs, goals and information about themselves. This information will be shared in new “All About Me” folders for each student. These folders will travel with the students throughout their schooling at Allenby.

Classroom Visits
We understand the anxiety that can be created with the uncertainty of classroom assignments over the summer. This is why, this year, students will receive their classroom assignment on the final report card sent home on June 28th. Additionally, students will be able to visits next year’s class on the last day of school following afternoon recess to meet their teacher and classmates. I understand that some families may have begun their summer vacation on the last day and will not be able to participate however, students, unlike previous years, will still be able to know their classroom teacher and can connect with friends in their class over the summer. I am confident that you can appreciate that we cannot make other arrangements for all students beginning their summer vacation early.

The role that you play as parents in supporting transitions and your child with feeling comfortable, safe and stable is equally important. Be sure to remain positive, ask your child what their concerns are, and share your own experiences with change and the strategies you used. We all remember a time when we were the new kid in class, when we had a friend move away, or a new teacher was hired. It can be scary, however, changes are all a part of life and we eventually adjust. So too will your children with all of our support.

See you at Fun Fair!

Tracey O’Toole

Dear Parents, Supporting students as they transition from one grade to the next or one school to the next, is important to us at Allenby.
