Allenby stands on what was once the site of a large Wendat village in the 1400s. This village likely contained several longhouses, and artifacts unearthed from the site in 1887 include stone and bone tools for sewing and fishing, pipes, pottery, and burnt corn.<\/p>\n
In 1926, the Toronto Board of Education decided to build a new school in response to local development. A small, wooden, one-room schoolhouse was built, and 22 pupils in Grades 1\u20138 began classes later that year. Lord Edmund Allenby, a British First World War hero, gave permission for the school to be named in his honour.<\/p>\n
The school grew rapidly. The cornerstone of a new permanent building was laid in November 1927, and the nine-room building opened in January 1928 with 311 pupils and eight teachers. A ten-room addition was begun in 1929, and the school\u2019s formal opening ceremony was held on March 17, 1931. The building was renovated and expanded in 1972 and again in 1994. The Allenby Parents’ Association was established in 1946.<\/p>\n
Allenby operates on a 5-day cycle, meaning the school schedule is based on Days 1 to 5 rather than Monday to Friday. (This ensures that subjects are not missed due to statutory holidays.)<\/p>\n
