Whether it is the visit by Rick Mercer last week tied to the amazing Project Giveback initiative that all of our grade 4 students do each year, to an engaging math workshop focused on inquiry and problem-solving attended by staff, admin and parents, to our innovation lab buzzing with students engaging in rich, relevant tasks to make a difference including our grade 3s creating accessible playground equipment (to name just one of many examples).

As a parent, I always want to know details about my own children’s day, in fact it is the first question I ask as I walk through the door each evening. Now that they are teenagers, that simple question leads to a rich detailed conversation. Yet when they were young, I was often met with “nothing” as a response when I asked what they did at school. Knowing that this is a common response from all children, I find it important to “create a window into our school” to keep parents engaged and informed of the great things happening in our building. Some methods for us to share the work happening at school is via the school website, this weekly newsletter, teacher emails, blogs, and newsletters (it is not via homework, worksheets or notes in the agenda as these serve a different purpose). The best method, however, is our school’s twitter feed which allows us to tweet in the moment and extend beyond the classroom so that parents and the community can be made aware of the great things happening at a school level and not simply at classroom level. If you are on twitter please ensure you follow @AllenbyPS_TDSB.

I also want to invite parents to attend the APA Meeting next week to learn more about STEM and our Innovation Lab as I will be doing a presentation on STEM as part of the meeting – another great way to get a glimpse into life at Allenby and our focus on 21st century learning, and preparing our students for life in a dynamic and rapidly changing world.

Tracey O’Toole

Dear Parents, Great things are happening at Allenby!
