Volunteer Reading Partner Initiative

We are all very excited about the launching of our “Volunteer Reading Partner Program!” for the 2011-2012 school year.

Parents/Guardians, retired community members etc. who speak French, English or another first language have the unique opportunity to volunteer in the school, support our reading initiative and have a direct impact on improving student achievement. Volunteers will be partnered with selected students to share reading in a Literacy Corner.

The students and books are carefully chosen by teachers so that the literacy volunteers could meet with their student partner for a 30-minute session once a week. If you have time, you could be partnered with several students. We start with Grade 1 students needing support, then move on up the grades if we have enough reading volunteers.

All volunteers will be provided with a Police Check (a TDSB Policy when working directly with students), participate in a one-hour training workshop to promote consistency in the program, as well as given amazing strategies to teach reading and even support your own children at home! If you want to volunteer for this program, please let your child’s teacher know or come into the office. You will be asked to fill out a form indicating your availability, and we will set up the training session later this month or early in November. You can also download the form here.

“It takes a village to raise a child” so this is an important partnership with your school and with your help you we can make a real difference in the early literacy skills of our students.
Thank you for your support.
