June message from the Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Here are some final news items for the year from the school.

Grade 6 Graduation

This exciting event in the lives of our Grade 6 students will take place on June 28th. Some students will be selected to take a role in the proceedings and three awards will be given.

The Allenby Cup, which was initiated by Lord Allenby, is awarded to a Grade 6 girl and a Grade 6 boy who are role models in effort, attitude, behaviour, citizenship and leadership. In particular, they:

  • are academically successful;
  • are respectful, sensitive and considerate towards younger students, peers and adults;
  • are seen as a leader by their peers and by staff;
  • show exemplary behaviour and attitude;
  • take initiative and actively participate in school life;
  • The students  have cast secret ballots to vote for the recipients of this award.

The Valedictorian is also selected by the Grade 6 students by a secret ballot to represent the Graduating class for the following characteristics:

  • Strong academically
  • Excellent speaking skills, confident in front of a large group
  • Seen as a leader by peers
  • Exemplary behaviour and attitude
  • Actively participates in school life

The Valedictorian makes a 5-minute speech at the ceremony in which he or she addresses the memories of their years at Allenby and serves to inspire the graduates with wise words for the future.

Class Representatives for each class, one male and one female, are also selected by secret ballot. These students will speak about some highlights of the life of the class over the past year.

The Principal’s Award, sponsored by the Ontario Principal’s Council, is awarded to one or two students who

  • show high academic achievement, leadership and active participation in school;
  • have also gone beyond expectations in making a contribution to the class and/or school as a whole.

These students may not even know that their contributions have been noted.
This award is determined by the Principal in consultation with staff.

Hosts for the evening, nominated by staff,  show

  • excellent speaking skills;
  • confidence and poise in speaking to a large group;
  • exemplary role models and representatives of the graduating class.

These students are selected by staff.

Careful thought and preparation has gone into the selection of the winners and the criteria clearly outlined to the students. It is gratifying to see how seriously most students take this task and how much consensus emerges about the choices.

Staffing News

We have interviewed and hired a Grade 3 /4  French Immersion Teacher, Denis Bell. The Grade 1 vacancy has not yet been filled but we expect to interview and hire during the next week.

Report Cards

Report cards will be coming home next Tuesday, June 28th. Your child’s placement for next year will be indicated on that report card. Please note that all class placements are subject to September realignment in the event that there is a significant discrepancy between actual numbers and those projected. Given the current registrations in Junior Kindergarten, this is a real possibility in Kindergarten, and there will an update early in September if there are to be any changes.

As this is the last update for the year, please let me take this opportunity to wish all Allenby families an enjoyable and safe summer holiday.
