The TDSB is proud to recognize important days of significance throughout the school year, including a number of heritage and history months. TDSB Committees, made up of community members and staff, are in place for many of these to plan activities that celebrate the month and our diverse TDSB community.

Rosh Hashanah
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year. But it’s not like the New Year you might be thinking of with fireworks and countdowns. It’s a time to think about the past year and get ready for a fresh start.
Here are a few things that make Rosh Hashanah special for those who celebrate it:
- Sweet Treats: People eat yummy foods like apples dipped in honey to hope for a sweet year ahead. Many of the special foods are round, like a round challah bread, to remind us that a new year is like a full circle, and the hope is for a complete and good year.
- Shofar Sounds: The shofar is blown to wake everyone up and get them thinking about the new year. It makes three different sounds: a long blast, three short blasts, and a bunch of tiny ones.
- Family and Friends: It’s a time for families and friends to gather together, share special meals, and wish each other “Shana Tova,” which means “Good Year!”
So, if you hear a shofar being blown, you’ll know that the Jewish New Year is here, bringing with it a chance for a sweet new start!
